A calm, grounded form inspired by Indian craft and modern British interiors.

This handmade papier-mâché bowl features a wide, grounded form with a softly layered rim—designed to sit low and calm within a space.

Crafted by artisans in India using traditional papier-mâché techniques, its surface carries natural variations and a stone-like texture that feels both earthy and architectural. The generous opening makes it ideal for styling with potpourri, dried botanicals, or simply as a sculptural object on its own.

Designed in the UK, this piece reflects Aala India’s approach to modern living—where Indian craft heritage meets quiet, contemporary design. Made from recycled paper, each bowl is unique, celebrating imperfection and handwork.

A thoughtful addition to shelves, coffee tables, or consoles, this bowl brings warmth without noise—presence without excess.

Looking after it

  • Keep it dry. Never immerse, rinse or wipe with a wet cloth.
  • Dust with a soft, dry brush or a dry cloth.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight so the colours stay true.
  • Keep a naked flame well clear — layered paper is flammable.
  • Store somewhere dry and steady — not a bathroom, a conservatory or a windowsill above a radiator.

Dry use only — it will hold whole fruit such as bananas and apples, potpourri or keys. Not waterproof, so keep it away from water and never put it in a dishwasher.

Every piece is built up layer by layer and painted by hand, so colour, texture and the exact shape shift a little from one to the next. That variation is the point, not a fault.

Why it costs what it costs

A paper mache piece looks simple, and the work is in the making. Here is where the difference sits, so you can judge it yourself.

Questions before you order

  • Are they really made of paper?

Yes. Each piece is shaped from recycled paper by hand, then painted by hand.

  • Can I put anything in it?

Anything dry. It will hold whole fruit such as bananas and apples, potpourri, keys or jewellery. It is not waterproof, so keep it away from water and anything wet, and never put it in a dishwasher.

  • How do I clean it?

Dust it with a dry, soft brush or a dry cloth. Do not use water, wipes or cleaning sprays, and never put a piece in a dishwasher — paper and water do not mix.

  • Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. Every piece is painted by hand, so the depth of colour and the run of a line vary a little from one to the next. Screens and room lighting shift colour too, so yours may read a shade warmer or cooler at home.

  • How should I store it between seasons?

Keep it somewhere dry and at room temperature. A loft or a garage can get damp, and paper does not like damp. Wrap the piece in tissue, then store it in a rigid box so nothing presses on it.

  • How much is UK delivery?

    • Free UK delivery on orders over £49.98.
    • Standard UK delivery is £5.99.
  • What if it is not right when it arrives?

Tell us and we will put it right. If a piece arrives damaged, send us a photograph before you do anything else.

Made by hand

Designed in the UK, made by hand in India

Aala India is a UK-based home decor brand shaped by Indian craft and architectural heritage. The pieces are designed here in the UK and made in India by hand, using traditional techniques and recycled paper.

Paper mache is built up rather than cast or pressed. Paper is layered over a mould by hand, then shaped and painted by hand. Because of that, no two pieces come out identical — a rim sits a fraction wider on one, a brush mark catches the light on another. The variation is the material telling you a person made it.

The same technique sets the limits, and we would rather be plain about them. Layered paper is light in the hand. It will hold whole fruit such as bananas and apples, potpourri or keys, but it is for dry use only: not waterproof, and not for the dishwasher. Keep a piece dry and out of direct sunlight.
