Paper mâché is what the name suggests: paper, pulped and given a new shape. Every Aala paper mâché piece begins as recycled paper. It is soaked and worked into a pulp, formed by hand in India, left to dry, then finished and painted.
Because each of those stages is done by hand, no two pieces are quite the same. Expect small differences in surface, edge and colour from one piece to the next, and between a piece and the photographs on this page — screens show colour differently, and paint applied by hand varies. We would rather say that plainly than photograph our way around it.
Paper mâché is for dry use. A bowl holds whole fruit such as bananas and apples, potpourri, keys or jewellery. It is not waterproof, so keep it away from water and never put a piece in a dishwasher.
Place it indoors, out of direct sunlight and away from damp, radiators and open flames. Bathrooms, kitchen splash zones, conservatories and unheated lofts or garages are the places paper struggles with most. Dust with a dry, soft brush or a dry cloth — no water, no wipes, no cleaning sprays.
