  • Made by hand in Jaipur
  • Painted by hand
  • For dry things

A paper mâché bowl whose rim rises and falls in soft, irregular lobes, like an open flower, with shallow pleats following the lobes down to a small flat base. It is a chalky, matt off-white inside and out, with a rough, hand-formed surface and a thin, slightly ragged rim edge.

  • Designed in the UK, made by hand in Jaipur from recycled paper and painted by hand.
  • Holds dry things: potpourri, whole fruit such as apples and bananas, or keys.
  • Sits well on a shelf, table or in a styled corner, filled or on its own.
  • Each bowl is shaped by hand, so every curve varies slightly and no two are exactly alike.
  • Clean gently with a dry, soft cloth and keep away from water and moisture.

For dry use only. It is not waterproof and not for the dishwasher.

Looking after it

  • Keep away from water and moisture.
  • Clean gently with a dry or soft cloth.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight so the colours stay true.
  • Keep a naked flame well clear. Paper mâché is flammable.
  • Store somewhere dry and steady: not a bathroom, a conservatory or a windowsill above a radiator.

Dry use only. It will hold whole fruit such as bananas and apples, potpourri or keys. Not waterproof, so keep it away from water and never put it in a dishwasher.

Colour, texture and the exact shape shift a little from one piece to the next. That variation is the point, not a fault.

The making

Designed in the UK, made by hand in Jaipur

Aala India is a UK home decor brand. Each bowl is designed in the UK, then made in Jaipur from recycled paper pulp, pressed by hand over a mould, left to dry and painted by hand.

Because each bowl is made and painted by hand, each one varies slightly: a rim sits a fraction wider on one, a brush mark catches the light on another. The variation is the material telling you a person made it.

Questions before you order

  • Are they really made of paper?

Yes. Each piece is made by hand from recycled paper, then painted by hand.

  • Can I put anything in it?

Dry things only: whole fruit such as bananas and apples, potpourri or keys. It is not waterproof, so keep it away from water and anything wet, and never put it in a dishwasher.

  • How do I clean it?

Dust it with a dry, soft brush or a dry cloth. Do not use water, wipes or cleaning sprays, and never put a piece in a dishwasher. Paper and water do not mix.

  • Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

Not exactly. Every piece is painted by hand, so the depth of colour and the run of a line vary a little from one to the next. Screens and room lighting shift colour too, so yours may read a shade warmer or cooler at home.

  • How should I store it if I put it away?

Keep it somewhere dry and at room temperature. A loft or a garage can get damp, and paper does not like damp. Wrap the piece in tissue, then store it in a rigid box so nothing presses on it.
